Cascadia - Update 43: A Tale of Two Tiles (Oct 15th, 2011)

Postby canyonjumper » March 23rd, 2010, 4:32 am

Just reposting updates from SC4D. I've got 18 ready to go ;D

UPDATE ONE (Posted Dec. 12, 2009)

All the cities featured in this MD are fictional, and are based on ideas for Cascadia, a proposed nation made up of parts of the Western states and provinces. Cities may be entirely fictional, or they could be re-designs of actual cities, like Vancouver, Seattle, etc.

Image

1-01
I downloaded the map TSC Lake Leman, which is based on Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
Image

The blue square is approximately where the first city I will feature (Lakesyde), is situated in the region. This update is set in May of 2010, before the formation of the Pacific Nation of Cascadia.

1-02
Lakesyde was founded after some kayakers got lost trying to cross Lac Leman. Halfway across the lake, a vicious storm knocked them off course Having lost most of their equipment in the turbulent waters, the surviving kayakers sought shelter at what came to be known as Kayaker's Point. They thought it would be s good place to live, so they came back and founded the town.
Image

1-03
Thirty years have passed, and the small town of Lakesyde has expanded along the shore, with plans for further expansion. The leader has decided to stagger zoning, and keep dirty industry out. He is trying to keep the town clean and efficient, so it can be leading force in the future.
Image

1-04
The Lakesyde Town Hall is just across the road from Central Park. Central Park is the main rest spot on town. A replacement park is planned for May of 2011. Plans include an outdoor stage, man-made pond, a soccer pitch, and a plaza.
Image

Here are some pics showing the development:
1-05
Image

1-06
The Heights is a developing neighbourhood that the council is trying to clean up to eventually house high wealth residents. Expect more in the future.
Image

1-07
Image

1-08
What better way to dispose of garbage than to dump it over the side? Or turn it into plasma?
Image

Well that's it for the first update of Cascadia. I hope you enjoyed it and please leave comments! Constructive criticism is also welcome. :)

Here are some links to the more interesting Lots and BATs...If I remember the links!

UPDATE TWO (Posted Dec. 14, 2009)

Alright, in this second update I figured I should give some history as to the formation of Cascadia, as well as a map of the major
cities.

2-01
Image

In June 2010, the leaders of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California got together for an environmental meeting. During the meeting, Premier Gordon Campbell of BC suggested that he thought the best way to protect the forests of the Pacific would be to create an independent nation. He argued that the forest could be better protected if the same laws and bylaws were in effect along the length of the Northwest Pacific. The leaders of the American states could find no major cons about this idea. So in January of 2011, the Pacific Nation of Cascadia came into being. The new citizens voted in Rodyl Damor, a previous MP from British Columbia.

Cascadia is divided into 3 states, 1 province, and 3 federal districts. Washington, Oregon, and Idaho were able to retain their old borders, with the exception of Idaho, which lost a part to the US. Northern California was amalgamated with Oregon, the Alaskan Panhandle was added to British Columbia, with Juneau staying in Alaska. Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland were made into federal districts, belonging to no state or province.

And now to Lakesyde...

2-02
...where an underground mall is being constructed.
Image

2-03
...and finished
Image

2-04
There's an interesting story behind this solitary group of houses. A neighbourhood of Lakesyde had two groups of families. They fought over the stupidest things. "This is my half of the street, if I catch you on this side again...", "Your tree hangs over my yard, that gives me the right to chop it down.", etc. So eventually they snapped. One group left and built these houses away from the rest of the city.
Image

2-05
Eventually, the city got alarmingly close to the small settlement. So the families erected a wall, hoping to avoid further disputes.
Image

2-06
The families were horrified to learn of plans to develop the land around their enclosure. They fought the city, but eventually...
Image

2-07
They lost, and the city prepped the land for development. The families fumed
Image

2-08
The new developments were less than pleased with their new neighbours, but time went on, and the grudge passed. Eventually. At least the trip to school was shorter.
Image

2-09
The city decided to put a highway on the city limits, as an alternate route into the city. Construction began in the Spring of 2040.
Image

2-10
Image

2-11
And a city overview, taken in the Summer of 2042

What an awesome read!

I was toying with the idea of that garbage chute myself but opted for the garbage docks instead for realism's sake. Essentially the same thing though - makes garbage vanish at a pre-defined rate for a cost, with basically no repercussions.

I really like your diagonal grids... I haven't seen that before (though I spose it probably has been done before - I've never seen it though).
Very nice !
Do it right or you've wasted your time.

Good story and some great pictures! I'm a huge fan of that particular retainingwall set by jeronij, so you can't go wrong with me using those 8-)
The diagonal roads sure give this city character, very interesting... does it also work good traffic wise?

Those highway construction lots look pretty cool too, good find!

Update 3 (Posted Dec. 20, 2009)

3.01
Today's update is set in Douglas Shores, 35 kilometers (approx.) from Lakesyde.
Image
in
3.02
Here's an overview
Image

3.03
The schools of Douglas Shores. Douglas Secondary is on the left, and J.H. Lemeuw Elementary on the right.
Image

3.04
Hmmm. I guess it's not an ordinary farm. This was left over from when the US owned operated this land as a military base. It was left behind, and forgotten. With today's cutting edge research, we can examine the facility without getting too close...otherwise the barn roof opens up to reveal a deep chasm.
Image

3.05
Some development...
Image

3.06
Image

3.07
Morach Island, out in Douglas Bay. Developers have chosen it to build a small townsite, with a ferry connecting it with the mainland.
Image

3.08
After development...
Image

3.09
Image

3.10
And the whole island again...
Image

3.11
The waterfront...

3.12
Cascadia's initiative for clean energy means harnessing the heat from the mantle, with a geothermal power plant.
Image

3.13
A town overview, after some more work.

3.14
My little experiment with ploppable water...
Image

3.15
And overall overview, including Morach I., my experiment, and Douglas Falls. I apologize for the minimizing window.

Now, before I leave you, a teaser for somewhere in the near future...

I'd better do replies now :D

emgmod: Thanks! Soon as I heard the forums were up I thought I should stop over just to see what was here. Liked what I saw and here we are :D

CSGdesign: Thanks! Yeah I love that garbage lot, It solves all my garbage problems :D And the grids were something I thought of and implemented on the spur of a thought. I've seen it done in several MD's before.

Shilka: Thanks! Yes, those retaining walls are my favourite out of all the sets. And the roads do work well traffic wise; they are no different to orthogonal roads, it just depends on where you place them.

Nickie: Thanks! I'll see if I can fix the problem. In the meantime, you can see them here. I think I tagged them update4.

Update 4 (Posted Dec. 22, 2009)

Meanwhile, In Douglas Shores...
4.01
A private contractor bought some land and prepped it for development. He thought the city needed more residents. What town doesn't?
Image

4.02
Of course the contractor thought right, the developments were filled within months.
Image

4.03
The same contractor bought this plot of land, after his succesful developments. He turned it into a mall.
Image

4.04
The council decided it was time to upgrade Hwy 431 to 4 lanes. Construction started from the Hwy 401 interchange onwards into the center of town.
Image

4.05
Image

4.06
Areas along the highway were rezoned, and quickly redeveloped.
Image

4.07
This is the commercial area of town.
Image

4.08
This is the middle section of town.
Image

4.09
This is the residential area.
Image

4.10
And an overview...
Image

4.11
And two region shots. I'm not finished rendering the region yet. Douglas Shores is first, then Lakesyde.
Image

4.12
Image

That's all for now folks...Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

UPDATE FIVE (Posted Jan. 12, 2010)

This update is in three parts, the first is a fact sheet I had some time to make.

Part 1 - Fact Sheet

CASCADIA

BACKGROUND:
In June 2010, the leaders of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California got together for an environmental meeting. During the meeting, Premier Gordon Campbell of BC jokingly suggested that he thought the best way to protect the forests of the Pacific would be to create an independent nation. He argued that the forest could be better protected if the same laws and bylaws were in effect along the length of the Northwest Pacific. The leaders of the American states could find no major cons about this idea. On January 1st, 2011, Rodyl Damor was sworn in and the papers signed. The Pacific Nation of Cascadia was born.

INTERNET TLD: .cs

Part 2 - Douglas Shores
This part is an update to Douglas Shores.

5.01
In 2012, the need for a new provincial building grew, and the government took Douglas Shores under consideration. Eventually, Douglas Shores was selected for the location, and construction began in July 2012. Highway 431 was also upgraded and beautified.
Image

5.02-03
After too many accidents at this intersection, The city approved a redesign, and upgrade. Before and After.
Image
Image

5.04
This is the SkyRise Hotel and Casino, the first casino in Douglas Falls. I don't know why they built it right next to the legislature. Maybe the MP's wanted to gamble after work :D
Image

5.05-07
Here are some shots of the outskirts:
Image

Image

Image

Part 3 - Richmond West

This last part is an introduction to Richmond West, the Urban area I showed you in the teaser. The whole city was plopped and layed out first, while in pause, then watered and powered and unpaused. Richmond West is built on the west side of Lulu Island, where real-life Richmond is built. YVR (Vancouver Int'l Airport) is the island at the bottom of the page.

5.08
This is how it was plopped and layed out.
Image

5.09
I guess the Pan-Am guys wanted to build their building in the suburbs. I've solved the Sheraton hotel multiplication problem.
Image

5.10
Hmm.. what could be going here?
Image

5.11
Maybe this? You see all those parking lots? Each tile, plopped. That took forever :D
Image

That's all for the moment folks. Check back for the next update, where I'll show you around Richmond West some more.

Gorbag: Don't worry, I didn't mention it, and yes I do :D

Update 6 (Posted Jan. 17, 2010)

Today's update is in Richmond West, and shows you around the interesting places that I plopped and grew. Richmond West is rather large, as kwakelaar pointed out :D (pop. 695 757). The empty zones are only there because the city hasn't finished growing yet. And I kept getting duplicates, or buildings that didn't quite fit with the overall theme I had in mind for the area.

6.01
First I think, a pic of downtown.
Image

6.02
Here's some suburbs partially done.
Image

6.03
I really like how the streets turned out here. Very 'non-griddy'.
Image

6.04
Here's a 'second downtown' of sorts. All grown except the hospital.
Image

6.05
Here's Central Park, surrounded by a residential area (maybe a bit too residential).
Image

6.06
Here's a small W2W section of the city
Image

6.07
A small ghetto of sorts by the bridge to YVR (Vancouver Int'l Airport).
Image

6.08
A second shot of downtown.
Image

6.09
One of the many freeway exits. Hmm.. I forgot soundwalls on the one side.
Image

6.10
Here's OceanSyde Mall, a 'mall for all your shopping needs, be they small, tall, or as big as a house' (direct quote from their Ad campaign :D)
Image

6.11
This is the Matt Office Complex, containing the Edgren Law Firm, and Meaden Planning Agency, which the city hires to plan out the city. Is it a coincidence that Coke Stadium is right across the street?
Image

6.12
Richmond Centre is the premier shopping destination of Cascadia. It has an underground theme park to rival the West Edmonton Mall.
Image

6.13
Just a parking lot.
Image

6.14
This is the Cascadia Light Rail terminus in the Arthur Rooke residential district.
Image

6.15
I really like how this shot turned out. I had to do alot of bulldozing and rezoning to get that right.
Image

6.16
And another residential area.
Image

6.17
And the long overdue overview of Richmond West. Not very centralized is it? Well this is my first larger city.
Image

And that's all for today. Whew, that was a large update :D. See you guys next time, and again, thanks for the comments guys, keep 'em coming.

UPDATE SEVEN (Posted Jan. 23, 2010)

Today's update focuses on the addition of a median to Exit 34.

7.01
Before the improvement project, there was no median between the lanes.
Image

7.02
The frontage road beside the highway is moved over.
Image

7.03
Retaining walls are removed, and original frontage road demolished.
Image

7.04
Grading begins on the new lane.
Image

7.05
The new lane is built.
Image

7.06
The overpass is built.
Image

7.07
The old lane is demolished, along with the old overpass.
Image

7.08
An overview of the exit, beautifications to be finished at a later date.
Image

7.09
And now for some shots around the area. The residential area.
Image

7.10
The commercial area.
Image

7.11
An overview of the Chilliwack town site.
Image

7.12
And some farms for your eyes to enjoy!
Image

7.13
Image

7.14
Image

7.15
And Exit 39 on the outskirts of the farms.
Image

7.16
And a mosaic of Chilliwack Regional Campground to finish things off.
Image

Thanks for reading, and hope you enjoyed the latest update of Cascadia!

UPDATE EIGHT (Posted Jan. 27, 2010)

8.01
Here's a town overview.
Image

8.02
And here's a night view, just because :)
Image

8.03
This is the small community of Colgrove, just a residential block a kilometre away from Hixon, being built.
Image

8.04
And here it is complete.
Image

8.05
Colgrove Church, the oldest building in Hixon, built in 1866, by the family of Joseph Hixon.
Image

8.06
The Cascadian Railway Network (CRN) passes through Hixon. Lots of passengers commute with the CRN, so every town it passes through have modern, well-equipped rail stations.
Image

8.07
Where do they think they're going? There isn't anything in the direction they are heading.
Image

8.08
A solitary pedestrian walking through the middle of nowhere? Smart.
Image

8.09
Almost road kill there. There was three of them crossing earlier, and caused a car accident.
Image

8.10
Since when are llamas amphibians?
Image

8.11
And the finished pond. No llamas drowned in the making of this pond :D.
Image

8.12
And a shot of the rail station.
Image
And that was Update 8! See you guys next time!

Wow, this is almost too much at once for me to comment on :!:

Some really cool screens here, I liked the island shots! The city shots, there's so much detail there I could stare at them for hours. You seem to zone pretty large areas at once. Whenever I try that I can usually hardly keep up with power and water shortages and often I end up with heavy congestion all over the place and all sorts of problems. I hope following the natural growth method in my current journal will fix that problem of mine :P

Nickie: Thank you very much!

Gorbag: Thanks! I find the FAR Streets are better for rural area, and the curves for any area.

Update 9½

This is the first in a series of four updates about various vacation and resort towns around Cascadia. Each update will feature the town itself, and the various resorts, campgrounds, hotels, or motels around it. First up, Ashcroft.

9¼.01
Ashcroft was founded in 1967 by a group of loggers and their families as a temporary settlement meant to be disassembled when the nearby forests were cut down.
Image

9¼.02
However, now in 2011 the town has thrived.
Image

On SC4D, there is a Thematic Competition. Entrants have to submit pictures of a city which fits all the rules of that particular competition. I entered the competition. The next few updates focus on the building of the city, which I called Grantview.

The houses are mostly Matt325's, but I am beta-testing for the UCC Suburban Set, so those are in there too. SimGoober's stuff is also present. Everything else is W2W stuff from the STEX and assorted other buildings from various exchanges, but mostly the LEX and STEX.

Excellent use of the canals!
I love using canals myself (must be a Dutch thing in my case) and I really like how you used them.
Especially the way you line some of them with the narrow paths looks really, really nice.
